What’s up everybody? Welcome back to Episode Three of the Side Hustle to Full Time Web Design podcast. Today’s episode, we’re talking about answering the question really? Do I even need a side hustle? You know, there’s, there’s a few reasons to and there’s a few reasons to not the big reasons to not as is your time, you know, and every person situation is different. You’ve got to decide a few things. Number one, what’s really important to you in your life? Is it money that you need right now? Is it the time that you need with your family? Is it freedom, location wise, schedule wise, everybody has their own different set of circumstances, and you’ve got to look at your life, look at your whole situation, and decide if it’s right for you.
Keegan 1:31
I can tell you that I think the short answer to that question is yes. And that’s somebody who’s been side hustling for a number of years now really, for the last six years, been doing it on the side, and making a good addition to my day job income. And here’s the beauty of it, your side hustle does not have to say the same. So you can try a lot of different things, find the thing that you love, you know, side hustle, building websites, flipping things from garage sales, to to Amazon, trading, selling cards, playing video games, doing podcasts about things that you love, starting a YouTube channel, there’s so many side cat Besides, can’t speak today, there’s so many side hustles that you can do. And there’s so many ways you can you can monetize those things. It’s just a matter of what you want to do and how you want to do it.
Keegan 2:26
So let’s walk through a couple things. First, I think you need to stop and you need to write down a list. So get out a sheet of paper, and you want to write down a list of your, your current life goals. What’s the big one, you know, is it to spend more time with your family? I know that’s the case for a lot of people, because most people work a lot. And if you’re not, then maybe it’s to increase your income. You know, whatever that big, big main goal is, you’ve got to write that down that has to be the North Star that has to be what every decision you make, after that, whether to side hustle or to not and what side hustle you choose, it should play into you reaching this goal. You know, so if it’s a matter of of your time, and you want to spend more time with your with your family, and your money is okay, I would say there’s no reason for you to do a side hustle.
Keegan 3:24
Continue to put in the effort work what you got to work, do what you got to do in your day job. And when you come home, spend that time with your with your kids and your family. If you’re working all the time right now, and you don’t have enough money and your family is, you know, maybe the quality of life is suffering because you don’t have enough money. I would highly recommend the side hustle. But I say that saying you’ve got to be very, very clear and build the right guidelines around that side hustle. You really want to put guidelines in place and communicate well with your wife or husband and and with your family so that they know that this is the time that I’m dedicating to this and here’s why I’m doing it. I’m doing it for us, you know I’m doing it number one is a as an additional income stream, but potentially a nice creative outlet, a stress relief, those kind of things for you as well.
Keegan 4:17
The beauty of a side hustle is the chance to explore and really taste new things in your life. It’s going to help you figure out your passions. What do you love? What do you want to do? And you get to you get to play around with those and make a little bit of money in the meantime, you know, if you ultimately want to like me, I want to be location independent, talked about on the podcast many, many times. I want to have the freedom even if I decide to stay where I am. I want to have the freedom to be able to decide I can I can pack up my apartment, you know, leave the lease or whatever and pack up and move to a different part of the country. Go up to go up to Boston maybe leave the US and go to a different country for a while. I want that would be my choice. Even if I decided to stay here, that’s really important to me, you know, to be able to go and explore the world to see different things.
Keegan 5:07
You know, if you’ve been around, if you’ve listened to me for a while, you know, a few years ago, I did a, I did a 10 day trip to Guatemala with Habitat for Humanity. And it really changed my outcome on life, I was grind and hustle’n hard in my day job. And I took this trip, and it put things into perspective. For me, it put life into perspective, you know, we’ve got a lot of things that I think we take for granted, but that are major luxuries to most of the world or to a lot of people in the world. And it put things really into perspective for me, and made me appreciate them a whole hell of a lot more. And really, you know, it, it made me rethink whether or not I wanted to just grind all day and, and be in go mode and, and work that corporate job.
Keegan 5:57
I love the people I work with, I love my day job, I really do that my bosses are phenomenal. The brand, I work for is super awesome. We’ve done big things, but I’ve been a part of helping grow it. And I think that entrepreneurial mindset is deep entrenched in who I am as a person, you know, I was a part of this mom and pop and we grew it. And we build systems and we structure things. And we we blew this thing up over the last six years, you know, from just a couple of locations up to over 50. So it’s really, really, it’s been awesome. It’s been fun. And now I feel like I’m ready to do that, again, somewhere else, take something from a tendency to help grow it. And so you know that for me. And that helps you hopefully get a little bit of insight into how I answered this question for myself. You know, did I need a side hustle? Oh, yeah, I needed a side hustle. I needed the creative outlet. I needed a way to make extra money, honestly. Not that I needed it. But it was nice, you know, and it allowed for some other really cool things in life allowed me to travel and not worry about things that allowed for a lot of cool bonuses to my life.
Keegan 7:05
And so, you know, I really stress this if you’re if you have any. Or if you’re asking yourself the question of whether or not you need a side hustle. I think you got to look at your life. As a home, you got to find out which things are really truly important to you. And you’ve got to work your way into those things. If you’re working a nine to five job in an office. But your goal is to travel. newsflash, you’re never going to get that freedom to really, truly travel, because you’re going to be limited by vacation, you’re going to have to be in the same office five days a week, 40 hours a week, at minimum. That’s never gonna give you the life that you want. And I don’t say that to say that the life you’ve chose is wrong. I’m just saying if you’ve got to look at what you want out of your life, and you’ve got to build your life, to support the things that you really want.
Keegan 7:57
So if you need the additional income, do the side hustles. Stack all of the money on the side, every dollar of profit that you make you stack and you build up that that emergency fund. And then once you’re ready, you’ve built this the structure in your side hustle, then you can you can take the thing full time, really scale it, really make some money, put that money aside and give you the freedom that you want to go and make the choices for your life. That really matter to you. So, you know, I’m a little biased. But the quick answer just to wrap this whole thing up of whether or not you need a side hustle. My answer is always Yes, try things, taste things, explore. find things that you love, and do those things will make for a happier, much happier life. So that brings us to the end of another episode.
