In this episode, we walk you through all of the features you can expect in Smush Pro from WPMU Dev. This plugin makes it into every single Divi website we build and it’s helped us optimize clients websites that had images over 2MB in size ????.
Coming up in Episode 2, we discuss the Divi Ultimate Child Theme and Plugin. You won’t want to miss this one!
What’s up Divi addicts? Welcome to season four, episode number one where we’re talking and going to walk you through. Smush pro from WPMU DEV.
Alright Divi addicts, we’re back. We’re here, we’re in the saddle for episode number one of season four. And today we’re talking about Smush pro from WPMU DEV in this again, you mentioned it in the trailer. But this is one of those plugins that we have on every single site that we do, regardless of what else is going on. This will always be there because it’s meant to optimize images, and it compresses them. And it also because I have a premium membership into WPMU DEV, I use Smush Pro, not the free version that’s in the WordPress repository. And there’s some key differences between those two.
The number one being that smush pro handles a lot of the work on their own server, so it doesn’t bog down your WordPress server. And they also supply the images through their content delivery network, which is awesome. But basically, in Smush Pro, you’re going to double the savings with the super Smush, you’re going to get a 40 pot 45 point image CDN, which I don’t know what that means. But I know that it’s fast. You can get PNG, JPG and a GIF optimizer. And then there’s also this bulk Smush option. So you can one click, if you put it in and your website’s already been live, you click one button, and it’s going to go through and Smush all of the images that are on your website. And then you go through the settings and set it up so that every single image that you upload to your website moving forward can be automatically resized, so there won’t be over a certain image size, which will keep the file size down. But then it’ll also compress it.
And that’s, that’s huge. So this just to give you some numbers, this particular plugin has optimized 35.9 3 billion images, and it’s currently active on over 226,000 websites is getting really close to 227,000 websites. And its total combined, over 122,000 gigabytes of storage space on websites around the world. It’s pretty incredible. And we mentioned the bulk optimize, you can go through and do the bulk Smush, you can go specific into directories on your website, if you want to get really advanced with it, and smush things specifically in those directories. They’re outside integrations with CloudFlare and different things.
There’s a lazy load option that they’ve just released, you’ve got the CDN options, it’s really awesome. Plus, they’ve recently introduced this perfect fit image resizing where it’ll highlight if you’re an admin, it’ll highlight the image on your website in yellow and put a border around it and tell you the size that you should resize your image to. It’s really useful, very cool to show you like real deal image optimization.
The other part of it is that Smush pro uses the CPUs to compress images, which is 200 times faster than the regular smoosh free. It’s really cool. There’s so many other reasons that you might want to use this, like I mentioned, the lazy loader, it’s, it’s great because you can have things where you defer offscreen images, with just a press of that button, it handles it all. And it includes the customization, animations, and full range selection that improve your page speeds. And making the weight loads are the wait time on your page loads a whole lot less. And that is something that Google really likes. And we mentioned already, it supports JPEG, it supports PNG, it’s important to GIFs and that’s just I mean that covers basically everything that you could possibly want.
And that’s, that’s why I’m such a huge fan of this plugin. It allows you to strip metadata out of the images, it helps you free storage. And then if you happen to be a multi site user, you actually have global control on this because WPMU DEV is originally for WordPress multi user, which is now WordPress multi site and they build everything and they are they are the multi site gurus when it comes to plugins, they have some amazing additional plugins. So if you’ve never checked out WPMU DEV, do yourself a favor, absolutely go check them out.
But you know to tout some of the some of the prestige of this plugin is that it you know it one torques 2017 plus In madness, it was a champion. Also 2018 plugin madness. It’s a champion again. So two years running, it won awards for being an image optimization plugin champ. It’s got a quick coming, a super quick image setup, or setup of the plugin rather not image setup, but it goes through setting the parameters on the images and take you no less than no more than 30 seconds. It’s super fast. I’ve been through this setup so many times, and it’s just very, unbelievably easy to use.
The cool part of this it’s also multi language. So minimum there Spanish, Turkish, Serbian a ton of other languages. But we’ll walk through a couple of the features that it has. So you know, WPMU DEV towel set, it’ll double savings with super smush. You’ve got automatic optimization on load unlimited images every month, smush pro global CDN, you can compress huge photos all the way up to a 32 megabyte size. You can perfectly autofit image resize resizing, or it creates a perfect fit, auto image resize. There’s lazy loading that we talked about PNG to lossy JPEG smart convert, you got one click compression, you can retain the rights to every file forever. You can optimize images in any folder. It’s got multi site support.
And there’s so many other I’m not even going to bore you with the rest of what they have outside of the dedicated smushing servers. It’s just an unbelievable plugin and one that if you don’t have a WPMU DEV account and you can’t afford the $50 a month for WPMU DEV, which I will throw out a membership includes hosting for free on three sites, and access to all of their plugins, all of which are super high quality award winning plugins. So if you’re gonna, if you have 50 bucks and you’re gonna spend it somewhere, and you’re doing development for multiple sites, WPMU DEV is one excellent membership to have and only for $49 plus you get first 30 days for free to check them out. It’s worth it. And you there’s definitely pros to using smush pro and their pro level plugins over some of the free options that they do have.
But again, if you cannot spend that money, you don’t have it to spend, go into the WordPress repository and download the free version of Smush from WPMU DEV, because even though it’s a free plugin, it’s still done by a very reputable company and a company that just plugs out awesomeness or pumps out awesomeness however you want to say it, they do an awesome job. So that’s what we have for today. We appreciate you being here for episode number one of season four and talking through WPMU DEV Smush Pro. In episode number two, which don’t go anywhere, it’s already here. It’s already in your app. We’re going to talk about Divi ultimate, which is by far my favorite Child Theme for Divi flat out like period, no exceptions. So hang around, and we’ll talk in episode number two coming up.
